Hotel Description
Thank you for your interest in La Posada, Mary Colter s masterpiece and the Last Great Railroad Hotel. La Posada was built as an architectural fantasy. In 1928 Mary Colter - most influential designer in the Southwest - was asked near the Fred Harvey Company to design what was destined to become the Santa Fe Railway's flagship and the finest little hotel in Arizona. Colter created an imaginary timber and cattle baron - a Spanish Don - and built for him a splendid hacienda. To enter the building is to enter another era - like visiting an old castle in Spain or colonial Mexico. La Posada was built in they style of the late 1700's at a cost rumored at $2 million - an astonishing sum for the day. The main house of 68,000 square feet is bigger than Hearst Castle. La Posada was only open from 1930 to 1957, then closed to the public. It was almost knocked down many times. Today everything is being restored - acres of gardens, striking painted ceilings, stone floors, faux-adobe walls. We ve even set up a workshop to make furniture on-site as done at great country estates in the 18th century - the era of La Posada s inspiration. Come stay with us. Imagine yourself a relative visiting the family hacienda; a visitor of the wealthy Don and his cultured family and friends. Stay in the grand rooms with their striking furnishings and 6 porcelain bathtubs. Wander through the grounds and the splendid ballroom, arcades, lobby and courts. Bring your friends, children or favorite pets - you ll all feel at home here. There is nothing quite like La Posada. La Posada was closed to the public for forty years so to re-introduce the hotel we ve priced the rooms far below such fine accommodations anywhere else. Rooms are limited so please call for availability. Be sure to give yourself a few days here to discover Northern Arizona - there s much to see and do.
